(OLF News, June 27, 2009) Severe famine, drought, and shortage of drinking water is killing several people, especially women and children in several zones of Oromia, particularly in the low lands of Harargee and Baalee zones, our correspondents reported from the area. Accordingly, in Western Harargee zone, Mi’eessoo district the number of children who are dying due to starvation and malnourishment is increasing. Just recently among several children who were gathered at Asabot Hospital to seek help, more than 4 children died at the Hospital without getting any medical treatment or support, our reporters added. Among those who are on the verge of death due to extended malnourishment in the same district at a village known as Odaa Nagayaa are:

  1. Abdallaa Taajuu,
  2. Falmataa Jamaal,
  3. Muusaa Mahammad,
  4. Muusaa Abdallaa,
  5. Ahmad Usumaan,
  6. Mahad Umaar,
  7. Sa'aadaa Abdallaa ,
  8. Bakkoo Adamii, and
  9. Caaltuu Mahamad,
  10. Raasiyaa Mitoo (from Hundee Misoomaa village)
  11. Aminoo Adam (from Hundee Misoomaa village)
  12. Faaxumaa Unjaa
  13. Radiyaa Anjaboo
  14. Muntahaa Amad
  15. Daawud Hassanoo, and many others

Meanwhile, because several people perished from Qiqiliftuu village on June 17, 2009 some foreigners went to the graves and were counting those who died of starvation. The next morning, June 18, 2009, several people protested to the local authorities in the towns of Mi’eessoo and Asabot in front of the respective administration offices. It is reported that the local Wayyaanee officials closed their doors and refused to talk to the peaceful protesters.

In a related news, residents of Jijjiga town are suffering due to lack of drinking water. The local officials who do not really care for the suffering of the people are said to be politicizing the problem by telling the people on public gatherings that they will get them drinking water if the people elect them in the 2010 election.
